So what is Dry Skin?
CAUSES
Dry skin also called xerosis is caused by ageing, environmental and lifestyle factors.
- Ageing – our skin changes by becoming thinner and drier as the skin produces less oil.
- Skin conditions – rosacea, dermatitis and psoriasis can also be triggers that result in skin dryness.
- Heat – central heating reduces humidity which results in dry skin.
- Medical treatments – due to certain medications.
- Exposure to chemicals – skincare products such as harsh soaps, detergents, cleansers.
- Extreme weather– too hot or cold unbalances the skin lipid layer.
Lifestyle factors such as not getting adequate sleep prevents skin cells from repairing and healing which results in dull and dry skin.
SYMPTOMS
- Dry skin often feels rough like sandpaper, tight and sensitive.
- Redness, itchiness and can be painful.
- Flakiness, scaling and peeling.
- Fine lines and wrinkles appear.
PREVENTION
- Diet – Incorporate omega fatty acids and antioxidants that help to make healthy cells that contribute to healthy skin.
- Moisturise – These seal in water and helps protect the skin barrier, using a broad-spectrum sunscreen SPF 30 at minimum helps prevent sun damage.
- Hot showers – Limit shower time to less than 10 minutes and use warm to lukewarm water
- Gentle cleansers – Use cleansing creams instead of gels. Fragrance and alcohol free handwash. Always apply moisturiser to hands after washing.
- Environmental – Harsh weather, too hot or cold, harsh winds can be especially drying. Wrap up appropriately.
- Drink – Keep hydrated by drinking plenty of fluids.
