HOW HAS MENOPAUSE AFFECTED MY SKIN (AND HOW TO FIX IT)

Menopause, a natural biological process that marks the end of a woman’s reproductive years. Typically occurring from 45 to 55 years old, it is something all women go through but not commonly spoken about.

In additional to hormonal shifts and physiological changes, it brings changes in the skin. Almost as if we’re going through a second round of puberty, our skin may act up, we may be reintroduced to acne, dryness amongst other changes.

Understanding the reason why our skin changes during menopause is crucial to help us develop skincare solutions that addresses the unique needs of menopausal women and to help combat the signs of aging skin.

Why Does Our Skin Change?

During menopause our oestrogen level decline, leading to changes in the body and the skin. This happens because the role of oestrogen is to maintain skin elasticity, collagen production and moisture retention. Due to a decline in oestrogen levels, the skin becomes thinner, drier, prone to wrinkles, sagging and loss of firmness.

How Does This Effect Aging Skin?

  • Loss of Elasticity

The result of reduced collagen and elastin production contribute to decreased skin elasticity, resulting in sagging and loss of facial contours.

  • Dryness and Dehydration

The decline in oestrogen levels leads to a decrease of oil production and moisture retention in the skin. This results in dryness, flaky skin and increased sensitivity.

  • Wrinkles and Fine Lines

Due to the reduced collagen production, wrinkles are more likely to be formed, especially around the eyes, mouth and forehead.

  • Hyperpigmentation

Our hormonal fluctuations trigger and increase in melanin production which leads to formation of age spots, uneven skin tone and discolouration.

How Can We Fix This?

Although changing skin is completely normal, at Botanyx we’re here to help you find a skincare solution so you feel your best.

Follow these 7 easy tips on how to keep your skin and body healthy so you feel and look your very best:

  1. Hydration and Moisture

Use rich moisturisers, hydrating serums and facial oils to replenish moisture and combat dryness.

  • Collagen Boosting Ingredients

Find skincare with vitamin A and their derivatives such as caretonoids, beta carotene or the natural gentler form of trans retinoic acid found in rosehip oil, vitamin C and antioxidants.

If this is difficult to find, our Night serums contain rosehip oil blended with other collagen boosting, skin healing ingredients. Discover more here.

  • Sun Protection

Shield your skin from UV damage, wear broad spectrum sunscreen and try to stay in shaded areas to protect from skin cancer.

  • Gentle Cleansing

Use gentle cleansers that don’t strip your skins natural oils.

  • Antioxidant Protection

Aim to use skincare products enriched with antioxidants, especially botanical lipids and extracts.

  • Nutrition and Lifestyle

Support your skin from inside out. Try a diet rich in antioxidants, omega 3 fatty acids, vitamins, stay hydrated, get regular exercise, prioritise sleep and try to manage stress levels.

  • Hormonal Replacement Therapy (HRT)

If none of this works, consult with a medical practitioner to discuss your best options.

At Botanyx, we strongly recommend incorporating the above tips and adapting a holistic approach to lifestyle, skincare and wellness to help you embrace this new phase of life with confidence and grace.

HOW TO BOOST COLLAGEN

READY TO BOOST YOUR COLLAGEN NATURALLY?

Collagen is that magical ingredient that keeps your skin looking youthful, fresh and radiant. It is produced naturally in your body and acts as scaffolding to provide support to the skin, muscles and bones. Its production begins to decline as you age, and many people resort to taking supplements with the hope of defying the ageing process.
